Big Game Anglers

A legacy of Game Fishing

Game fishing in Australia has its roots in Bermagui, where the first marlin was caught off the coast in 1933. This historic catch marked the beginning of a fishing tradition that would soon become a major part of the local culture, attracting anglers from across the country and overseas. By 1936, the growing popularity of the sport led to the establishment of rules and regulations, and the Bermagui Big Game Anglers Club (BBGAC) was founded. The club has continued to thrive ever since, with only a brief hiatus during World War II.

Today, Tag and Release fishing is at the forefront of the club's activities, focusing on preserving fish stocks and supporting research on migratory species. Bermagui remains a key destination for game fishing enthusiasts, blending tradition with conservation efforts to ensure the sustainability of this beloved sport.
